# Staying Current with Code Changes
Building codes update on a three-year cycle. The NEC publishes a new edition every three years (2020, 2023, 2026). The IBC, IPC, and IMC follow similar cycles. Each edition adds, modifies, and removes requirements. Then your local jurisdiction adopts the new code — sometimes years later — and adds their own amendments.
Keeping up with these changes is a professional responsibility, but reading through every change in a 1,000-page code book is impractical. AI helps you focus on what actually changed and what it means for your work.
When a new code edition is adopted in your jurisdiction, use this prompt:
Summarize the significant changes between the [previous edition] and [new edition] of the [code name, e.g., "National Electrical Code"] that affect [your trade specialty, e.g., "residential electrical work"]. For each change:
1. What was the old requirement
2. What is the new requirement
3. Why the change was made (safety data, new technology, etc.)
4. How it changes what I do in the field
5. The section number for reference
Focus on changes that affect day-to-day installation, not administrative or editorial changes.Upgrade to Pro to access the full content
