Formative Assessment: The Engine of Responsive Teaching

Formative assessment is the most powerful instructional tool available to teachers — research by Black & Wiliam (1998) showed it can produce learning gains equivalent to moving an average student into the top 35% of achievers.

Yet most "formative assessment" in classrooms is actually just frequent grading. Real formative assessment has three characteristics: 1. It's designed to inform instruction, not assign grades 2. It happens during learning, not after 3. Teachers (and students) act on the data to adjust what happens next

The Formative Assessment Cycle

  1. 1.Gather evidence — What do students currently understand?
  2. 2.Interpret — What does this evidence tell me about their thinking?
  3. 3.Act — What do I do differently in the next 5 minutes / tomorrow based on this?
