Formative Assessment: The Engine of Responsive Teaching
Formative assessment is the most powerful instructional tool available to teachers — research by Black & Wiliam (1998) showed it can produce learning gains equivalent to moving an average student into the top 35% of achievers.
Yet most "formative assessment" in classrooms is actually just frequent grading. Real formative assessment has three characteristics: 1. It's designed to inform instruction, not assign grades 2.
