# Language and Culture Prep

You do not need to be fluent to travel well. But knowing 30-40 phrases in the local language, understanding basic cultural norms, and having a real-time translation strategy will transform your experience from "confused tourist" to "respectful visitor who makes an effort."

AI is remarkably good at this specific task.

Building a Survival Language Kit

Do not ask AI for "common phrases in Portuguese." You will get a textbook list that misses what you actually need. Instead:

I am traveling to Lisbon, Portugal for 5 days. I speak zero
Portuguese. Create a survival language kit organized by situation:

For each phrase, include:
- The Portuguese phrase
- Phonetic pronunciation (for an English speaker)
- Literal translation
- When/how to use it
- Cultural note if relevant

Categories:
1. GREETINGS & POLITENESS (hello, thank you, excuse me, sorry)
2. RESTAURANT (table for two, the check please, dietary restrictions,
   "what do you recommend?")
3. DIRECTIONS (where is..., how far, left/right, bus/metro)
4. SHOPPING (how much, too expensive, just looking)
5. EMERGENCY (help, hospital, police, I need to call my embassy)
6. SOCIAL (my name is, I don't speak Portuguese, do you speak English,
   this is delicious)
