The Anatomy of a Financial Report

Annual Reports (10-K) — Key Sections:

Business Overview (Item 1): What the company does, its markets, and competitive position. Useful for context but rarely changes quarter to quarter.

Risk Factors (Item 1A): The gold mine that nobody reads. Companies are legally required to disclose material risks. Changes to risk factors between filings often signal emerging issues before they hit the financials.

MD&A — Management Discussion & Analysis (Item 7): Where management explains the numbers. This is the most important section for understanding WHY financials changed, not just what changed.
