The Training Data Difference

Every AI image generator learns from data. The critical question for commercial use is: where did that data come from? This is where Adobe Firefly occupies unique ground.

Midjourney and Stable Diffusion were trained on massive datasets scraped from across the internet, including copyrighted images from photographers, illustrators, and stock libraries. The legal challenges surrounding this data are ongoing and unresolved. DALL-E 3's training data is less transparent, though OpenAI has stated it includes licensed content and has deals with publishers like Shutterstock.

Adobe Firefly was trained exclusively on three categories of data: images from Adobe Stock that Adobe has licenses for, public domain content whose copyrights have expired, and openly licensed content with permissions for training use. This is a deliberate and costly choice. Adobe's training dataset is smaller and more constrained than competitors, which means Firefly sometimes lags in raw creative range. But it means every image Firefly generates has a clean provenance chain. No artist's work was used without appropriate licensing.

For individuals creating blog images or social media posts, this distinction may feel academic. For agencies producing work for Fortune 500 clients, for marketing teams at publicly traded companies, or for publishers with legal departments, it is the difference between confidence and risk. Several major companies have internal policies requiring Firefly (or equivalent transparently-licensed tools) for any AI-generated visual content used commercially.
